Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions from our international clientele — so you are thoroughly prepared for a voyage of a lifetime aboard a premium Raja Ampat phinisi.

Raja Ampat, in West Papua, is globally recognised as the epicentre of marine biodiversity — its pristine reefs harbour over 75% of the world’s known coral species. Beyond the underwater marvels lies a breathtaking landscape of karst islands, hidden lagoons, and untouched white-sand beaches. Its remoteness and ecological integrity provide an exclusive, almost spiritual connection with nature, far removed from the usual tourist trails.
The phinisi — a two-masted wooden sailing vessel — is a living testament to Indonesia’s maritime heritage, crafted by skilled Buginese shipwrights. Modern phinisis blend that artistry with contemporary luxury: spacious decks, elegant cabins, and a sense of romantic adventure unmatched by conventional motor yachts. They are inherently stable, designed for the archipelago, and offer a truly immersive cultural and natural experience at the highest standards of safety and service.
The optimal season runs from October to April, when the seas are calmer, visibility for diving and snorkeling peaks, and the weather is predominantly sunny with minimal rainfall. While shoulder seasons are possible, the calmest and most predictable conditions fall within this primary window. We always advise consulting us for precise weather patterns closer to your dates.
Given the limited number of truly premium phinisi vessels and rising global demand, we strongly recommend booking at least 12 to 18 months in advance. For peak season or specific sought-after vessels, even earlier is advisable. Last-minute availability for top-tier vessels is rare, so proactive planning is key to a seamless experience.
A premium charter typically includes private ensuite cabins, full-board gourmet meals, non-alcoholic beverages, a dedicated professional crew (captain, chef, dive guides, stewards), guided activities (diving, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, island excursions), dive equipment, and port fees including the Raja Ampat Marine Park Fee.Common exclusions: international and domestic flights to Sorong, alcoholic beverages, specialty dive courses, gratuities, travel insurance, and personal expenses. Your charter agreement specifies inclusions and exclusions precisely.
Terms typically involve an initial deposit of 25–50% upon signing the agreement, with the balance due 60 to 90 days before embarkation. Bookings made inside that window may require full payment upfront. Cancellation policies are generally strict given the bespoke, high-demand nature of these charters — we strongly advise comprehensive travel insurance with trip-cancellation coverage. All terms are clearly outlined in your personalised contract.
The primary gateway is Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ). International travellers fly into a major hub such as Jakarta (CGK) or Bali (DPS), then take a domestic flight to Sorong. On arrival, our team arranges seamless transfers from the airport to your phinisi, typically moored in Sorong harbour. Embarkation and disembarkation are almost always in Sorong.
Most foreign visitors require a visa. Many nationalities are eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at major airports for stays up to 30 days, extendable once; others must apply in advance. Please check the latest regulations for your nationality well ahead of travel. Beyond general entry requirements, the only Raja Ampat-specific requirement is the mandatory Marine Park Fee, usually handled by your charter operator.
Always consult your healthcare provider, but general precautions include up-to-date routine vaccinations, Hepatitis A & B, and typhoid. Raja Ampat is a low-to-moderate malaria risk area — discuss anti-malarials with your doctor, especially for land excursions. Practise good hygiene, drink bottled water, and bring a personal first-aid kit. Our vessels carry comprehensive medical kits and crew trained in emergency protocols.
You can anticipate a level of luxury and bespoke service rivalling a five-star boutique hotel — elegant interiors, spacious ensuite cabins, and ample common areas. A highly trained crew-to-guest ratio ensures personalised attention, from dedicated dive guides and expert chefs to attentive stewards. Every detail is curated for an exclusive, unforgettable maritime experience defined by discretion and excellence.
A charter is a canvas for adventure: diving and snorkeling the world’s most biodiverse reefs, kayaking and paddleboarding through turquoise lagoons, island excursions to pristine beaches and viewpoints, wildlife spotting (including the Red Bird of Paradise), sustainable fishing, relaxation on spacious decks, and endless photography opportunities. Each itinerary is flexible and designed to maximise exploration.
Safety is paramount. Each vessel adheres to rigorous international maritime safety standards — advanced navigation and communication (GPS, radar, satellite phone), life rafts and jackets, fire detection and suppression, first-aid kits, oxygen, and emergency supplies. Crew are trained in first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures, and dive operations follow strict PADI/SSI guidelines with certified dive masters.
A journey through Raja Ampat is fundamentally about disconnecting, but many premium phinisis now offer satellite internet. Manage expectations: speeds can be slower and less reliable than on land, and data may be limited or come at extra cost. It is generally sufficient for essential communication but not heavy streaming. We encourage embracing the digital detox.
The official currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Your charter fee is typically paid in a major currency before the voyage, but incidental expenses onboard and ashore are primarily in IDR. ATMs are extremely scarce in Raja Ampat, so withdraw sufficient cash in Sorong before embarking. Some premium vessels accept major credit cards for larger incidentals, but cash remains king locally.
Prioritise comfort and sun protection: lightweight breathable clothing, multiple swimwear sets, high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, rash guards, sandals and water shoes, personal medications and seasickness remedies, an underwater camera with spare batteries, a reusable water bottle, a small dry bag for excursions, a light rain jacket, insect repellent, and proof of dive certification if diving. Keep luggage soft-sided for easier storage.
Showing respect for local culture and environment is paramount: dress modestly when visiting villages, ask permission before photographing locals, be mindful of customs and religious practices, never touch coral or feed marine life, use reef-safe sunscreen, bargain politely in markets, and learn a few Indonesian phrases (terima kasih — thank you). Our crew provides guidance for respectful interactions throughout your journey.
Absolutely. A private phinisi charter lets you craft a highly personalised itinerary. While we offer expertly designed sample itineraries, your preferences are paramount — world-class diving, hidden lagoons, birdwatching, cultural encounters, or simply unwinding in pristine anchorages. From specific dive sites to meal preferences and activity levels, we collaborate with you to create a bespoke journey that is uniquely yours.
